HOUSTON, TEXAS – APRIL 14, 2023 Kuwento Co. publishing company now offers pre-orders for the anticipated The Kuwento Book: An Anthology of Filipino Stories + Poems, set to release on on May 23, 2023 during Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month in the United States and Philippines National Heritage Month in the Philippines. The anthology celebrates and highlights kuwentos, personal stories and poems, of 28 Filipina/x/o writers, storytellers, artists, and community leaders. Readers will relate to stories and poems about:
- Growing up and figuring out life
- Moving to a new country or place, and finding your way
- Returning, discovering, and (re)creating home, family, and history
- The powerful role of women, mothers, and grandmothers
- Navigating and questioning love, relationships, identity, culture, and gender stereotypes
- Loss of self, a loved one, or through COVID-19
- Creating community and what it means to give back
“We all have kuwentos to tell,” says the editor and publisher, Dr. Pinky. “But many people do not want to share, because our stories have been historically dismissed and appropriated—in books, in school curriculum, and in the media. Now is the time to celebrate and share the voices of everyday, extraordinary Filipinas/xs/os. These stories and poems connect to our own experiences, validating the importance of representing the diversity of Filipinas/xs/os from all over the world. We have always been here, and we will keep telling our kuwentos as long as we exist.”
Co-author of Filipinos in Houston, Jenah Maravilla, enthusiastically exclaims, “[The Kuwento Book: An Anthology of Filipino Stories + Poems reminds me of] my once-beloved Chicken Soup for the Kid’s Soul, but the difference now is that this is uniquely ours. (Sinigang for the Pilipino Soul, Tamarind Soup for the Filipino Soul, if you will.) I truly hope this book gets into the hands of other eager bookworms, big and small.”
The Kuwento Book: An Anthology of Filipino Stories + Poems shines a much needed spotlight on the Filipina/x/o perspective from the United States, the Philippines, and beyond. No doubt, all readers of every age and background will connect and contemplate upon these experiences—being moved to laugh, cry, and root for each other within the pages.
