Writing Kuwento Tips

  • We are looking for real stories written by ordinary Filipinx Americans who have extraordinary and inspirational experiences. Their stories will connect with readers, most especially Filipinx Americans. You do not have to be an experienced “writer,” just someone willing to write and share their kuwento!
  • Good stories have a catchy beginning, meaty middle, and powerful ending.
  • Write in first person narrative; writing a personal account filled with heart, soul, and emotion. Kuwentos can make the reader laugh, cry, pensive, or kilig (exhilarating chills). Just make the reader feel what you are feeling.
  • In order for readers to say, “Wow! What a kuwento!” we encourage stories with thick descriptions, utilizing all five senses (touch, taste, sound, sight, and smell). We want readers to feel like they are there with you in your story.
  • Free write towards a first draft. Let your heart write your kuwento. Editing and revising will be your second step. Please spell check, proofread, and cite any facts before you submit.
